Abdias Calixte is the owner of Complete Fusion Welding. His company is a full services steel company able to furnish, fabricate and design. Abdias also provides Quality assurance/quality control to ensure all welds meet code requirements.  Abdias Calixte was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti where he spent his childhood watching his own father repair and replace sheet metal on many  houses because of the torrential downpour of rain that often flooded homes in Port-au-Prince. This experience is what fueled the desire for Abdias in welding fusion and fabrication of steel and the importance of a quality product.  Before leaving Haiti Abdias worked as a body guard to protecting the men who drove the armored trucks and made bank deposits. After doing this for some time Abdias felt inspired to attend Bible School. In 2003 Abdias migrated to the United States with his three little boys.         Haregu Nemariam is the owner of Nemariam Engineers. Her company specializes in transportation design and traffic control analysis. Haregu Nemariam was born and raised in Asmara, Eritrea. Her father was a prolific entrepreneur who owned a cinema, hotel, barbershop, bar and bus line. With only a formal education until the age of 8, her father encouraged his 6 daughters and one son to get an education and start their own businesses. “My siblings and I were fortunate to be raised by strong, progressive parents.  They were equal partners in keeping the family businesses running and encouraging us to pursue our education.  We continue to be inspired by their intentions every day,” stated Nemariam. A consistent struggle for Haregu’s family while she was growing up was the decades-long Eritrean war for independence against Ethiopia. Ryan Woodward is the co-owner of Epic Scan Ltd. His company specializes in 3-D laser scanning for existing structures, historical documentation and pre-design existing conditions documentation. Ryan Woodward was born and raised in Corvallis, Oregon.  Some of his early interests included fishing,  playing soccer and following the Oregon State Beaver sports teams.   While attending Corvallis High School, Ryan began to gravitate towards business.  He took accounting classes and studied small business management while also running the student store. A couple years after finishing college in 1998, Woodward hit on a career changing opportunity.  In 2000, both he and co-worker Carlos Velazquez were hired by Epic Scan, a 3-D laser scanning company.  The headquarters was located in Medford, Oregon and quickly became one of the nation’s first companies to provide scanning technology.  Some of the early scanner models were cumbersome to say the least. “We were trained on the Cyrax 2400, a 150 pound unit that required two hours to complete a 360 degree scan.  Nowadays our scanners weigh 15 pounds […]

Yayoi Yamamoto is the owner of PDX Coordinator. Her company specializes in coordinating events for Japanese media groups and companies interested in international trade with the Pacific Northwest and the Portland consumer market. Yayoi Yamamoto was born and raised in Shinagawa, Japan, a neighborhood district of Tokyo.  Both of her parents were second generation Tokyoites raised in the city.  Yayoi’s father was a disciplined and successful businessman who had three family owned restaurants and businesses.  She and her siblings were expected to help with many aspects of the business while also balancing school and sports. Naim Hasan was born and raised in Northeast Portland, where he attended Irvington Elementary School and graduated from Grant High School. Athletics played a critical role in his life, where he learned the important principles such as discipline, determination and dedication. From little league All-Star baseball teams to being a three sport high school letterman in football, basketball and track Naim realized the importance of hard work. Recruited to play football at Mt. Hood Community College, Naim decided to focus on education and earned his AA degree in Business Administration and later his BS degree in Business Administration/Marketing from Portland State University. With his strong desire to stay physically active and through the encouragement of a family friend, Hasan took an interest in marital arts. While attending classes at Mount Hood Community College, he began competing in Taekwondo competitions around Oregon, Washington and Canada. Michael Stewart was raised in Eolia, Missouri, about 80 miles north of St. Louis.  His mother worked in a garment factory and his father worked as laborer on a local farm.  With a population of 306, the town was small by most standards.  His family home had electricity but no running water.  Eolia had only three businesses at the time; a grocery store, fur trader and hardware store.  “I grew up in a town that had only one street light and one pop machine.  Fifty percent of our family’s food was either caught, shot or grown ourselves,” remembers Stewart. Michael was a good student and an accomplished athlete, primarily competing in basketball and track.  He was elected student council president for his class at Clopton High School.  The area was so rural that students traveled in from 10-15 nearby towns to attend the school.  Being raised as African American in a primarily white part of Missouri, he remembers that everyone in the school treated each other with respect.   After his […]

Ron Downey was born and raised in Portland. A sixth generation Oregonian, he is related to both Francis Pettygrove and Philip Foster, two of the earliest and most influential settlers in Oregon.  Pettygrove is long known to be one of the two pioneers who tossed a coin to decide whether the Rose City should be named in honor of Portland, Maine or Boston, Massachusetts.   Pettygrove won the debate with the best two of three tosses.  Downey, a Pettygrove descendent, is in possession of an 1817 Indian Head penny that has been in the family for as long as he can remember.  He was told growing up that it is the official penny used in the coin toss. Growing up in the Westmoreland neighborhood, Downey remembers how friendly Portland has been in his life.  “There were always multiple families to hang out with,” he reminisced. Rajiv Ali was born in Sadiya, India.  Rajiv was raised near the New Delhi Air Force station and later the Nal-Bikaner Air Force Station, where his father was a Warrant Officer in the Indian Air Force.  India’s first nuclear test at the Pokhran test range took place in 1974, about 60 miles away.  As a boy, Rajiv enjoyed playing both cricket and field hockey. At an early age, he showed a high aptitude for math and science.  When it came time to pick a college, Rajiv chose to attend engineering school at the National Institute of Technology in Kurukshetra. After graduating in 1989 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, he pursued his master’s degree at the Indian Institute of Technology in Roorkee, India.  It was there that he met a professor from the United States.  “He was from Missouri and we got along very well, I later decided to move there.” Ali jokes.   In 1991, he arrived in the U.S. to attend the Missouri University of Science & Technology, where […]

James Jen was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan. Some of his early interests included sketching cartoons. In high school he excelled in drafting and remembers how time would pass quickly when he was engaged in his projects.   His favorite sport was basketball. He was inspired by the NBA players in the United States, hoping someday he could be in the league.  “I didn’t really have the height, but I was small, fast and very competitive,” jokes Jen.  After recurring ankle injuries, Jen was forced to stop playing basketball. In 1976, James attended the China Maritime College.  Prior to graduating, he needed to fulfill his school’s requirement for one year on a Taiwanese commercial ship traveling the world as a Marine Engineer.   After graduating he spent two years in mandatory military service as a Navy officer.  While in the Navy, he coached two winning basketball teams. As part of  relocation to the Delta Park building, we wanted to highlight one of our close partners, ARC Document Solutions. We interviewed Kaye Kloster, Division Vice President of ARC. Kaye was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota with 5 siblings. After getting her bachelor’s degree in Communications at the University of Minnesota, she moved to San Jose for a marketing position with a telecommunications manufacturer. Her first exposure to Portland was in 1990, when she moved here for job opportunities. “I arrived in Portland and didn’t know a soul. It felt very welcoming and reminded me of Minneapolis with the river and friendly people,” stated Kloster. After working in business development roles for both CH2M HILL and HDR Engineering, she got a job with Ford Graphics in 1995. She began with Ford as an outside salesperson and worked into roles with more responsibility over time. The printing company was also in the midst of industry changes with the advent of digital print processing.
